The California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP) is a K-16 collaborative concerned with the improvement of student literacy and educational excellence in history and social science, headquartered at UC Davis. It gathers historians, teachers, and affiliated scholars that aim at advancing student learning and literacy. The CHSSP pays a lot of attention to the needs of native speakers with low literacy, English learners, and students from economically disadvantaged communities. The CHSSP’s goal is providing the highest quality history instruction and students knowledge improvement via research-based approach which focuses on historical content and disciplinary understanding, critical thinking, and the development of student literacy.

This project is a part of a larger network of discipline-specific programs known as the California Subject Matter Projects, administered by the University of California. The CHSSP and its seven sites are housed in UC and CSU departments of history and schools of education throughout the state. On all the sites teachers and scholars collaborate to improve classroom instruction, student learning, and literacy.
